It depends. It's difficult for me to itemize scenarios, but that's the only way I could be able to break down what I find appropriate and what I find offensive. That said, let it be known that this opinion comes from a half-hispanic bisexual female in a lesbian relationship.
In most cases, I need to know someone's intentions before I can pass judgement. For instance, if someone makes a lighthearted remark about my sexuality or my ethnicity, it's completely fine as long as I can be sure that their beliefs don't align with their words. I would laugh along with them.
The opposite would be a clearly disparaging remark. The most common I get is the classic,"Your hair makes you look like a lesbian." This infuriates me. Not only does it seem acceptable to most people, but it betrays in them a lingering stereotype that hinders not only lesbians, but women. The stereotype that lesbians and any woman with short hair and jeans on has a bad sense of style because they are too lazy, uncouth and stubborn to invest in their appearance. Appearance is a personal choice that often has little or nothing to do with personality traits. A short haircut does not mean you are lazy, uncouth, stubborn, unfashionable, suffering from penis envy, or anything else. I've gotten this remark from my parents and from friends, and every time I've let them know in some way that I'm offended when they say it and pointedly grimace at the word 'lesbian'.
This is just one example where I take things more seriously - there aren't many more. I think the gay community has learned to let ribald humor roll off their backs better than many ethnic groups. I'm not sure what this results in, but it can certainly help discriminated people voice their feelings without falling into pointless rages. It can also make it seem like "no big deal".
I'll stop rambling and move on to the other question. I'm a big advocate of "tough love". If I'm in a situation where someone is slightly offended but I am not, I'm more likely to guide the conversation towards them and give them the chance to speak out rather than speak for them. Part of overcoming discrimination is for everyone to earn their own voice - they can't shut us all up.
Everyone should always feel safe expressing their divergent opinions or sentiments. No one should be afraid of ridicule or violence. Obviously, there are some situations where one must walk away, but if you're among friends - real friends - why not let them know how you feel?

Okay, as some of you may know, I've had this phobia (to the point where I can't stand seeing or hearing the name of) a certain organ - they're on your sides, you have two, and they are involved in making pee...pretty much forever, for no reason.
And I've been having this pain in my right side off and on since this winter...
AND AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT, my doctor thinks it might be a stone or infection. I feel so sick. Ugh.
And yeah, RP availability might suffer. But when doesn't it? =_=

lol uhh...
I need to sleep now.
Then I need to get up, and do a few more sketches for my art project.
Then I need to call my dad and made him take me to the art store to get a 22x30 piece of paper.
Then I need to go to art class.
Then I might get some sleep, but probably not, because my portfolio and my final project are due on Wednesday.
So yeah...no sleep until Wednesday night, probably. And on Tuesday I'll have to meet with my scene partner for acting.
Then I have to go to class, turn my shit in, come home, and pass out.
And on Thursday, I have to study for my hueg psych final.
And work on my script and my horribleness.
And then sleep a little.
Then, on Friday, I have to get up early (like, 7:45am), go do my scene and my Frank-N-Furter impression.
And then I have 15 minutes to walk across campus to get to my psych final.
And once that's done, I'm FREE.
